President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) who saved America during the Great Depression, and subsequently saved capitalism, had this to say about taxes:
“Taxes, after all, are the dues that we pay for the privilege of membership in an organized society. And as society becomes more civilized, Government – national, State and local government – is called on to assume more obligations to its citizens.”
Today however, corporate lobbyists write legislation behind closed doors, and have their paid off politicians pass bills as swiftly as possible during the dead of night without debate or even having read it! It is no wonder why many of the largest corporations stash billions overseas, pay ZERO dollars in federal income taxes, and still end up getting a tax rebate in the millions year after year.
That is why children go hungry, young adults end up in insurmountable debt for seeking an education, local small businesses suffer, and people die due to lack of healthcare in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world. American corporations are unpatriotic when they desert our country and not pay their fair share of the dues like the rest of us.
How did we stray so far from the words and values of the FDR/New Deal era that brought us the American Dream? The Dream that inspired my family, like so many others, to leave everything behind for a better life.
Our campaign believes in restoring a progressive vision for the 21st century. It begins with the commitment our campaign took by refusing to accept any money from corporate PACs or lobbyists.
That means we depend on YOU to support our efforts.
